How to Understand CKD Stage 2 vs Stage 3 Like a Specialist Without Getting Lost in Medical Terms

Then you see a number you don't fully understand.
Maybe it's 68.
Maybe it's 48.
And now you're wondering:
“Am I getting worse?”
The good news is that you don't need to memorize medical jargon to understand the difference.
Start with eGFR.
Stage 2: eGFR 60–89
Stage 2 means kidney filtration is mildly reduced.
But here's the part many people miss:
An eGFR between 60 and 89 alone doesn't necessarily mean CKD.
Stage 3: eGFR 30–59
Stage 3 means kidney filtration is moderately reduced.
It's divided into:
• Stage 3a: eGFR 45–59
• Stage 3b: eGFR 30–44
So the difference isn't simply “Stage 2 is okay and Stage 3 is bad.”
The numbers describe different levels of kidney function.
Don't Judge Your Health From One Number
This is one of the biggest mistakes people make.
Your eGFR can change between tests.
Doctors look at repeated results and the trend over time.
A single result doesn't necessarily tell you how quickly your kidney function is changing.
Look Beyond eGFR
Another important number is your urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio, or UACR.
Albumin in the urine can indicate kidney damage and provides additional information about risk.
Your healthcare team may also consider blood pressure, diabetes, medications, symptoms, and the underlying cause of your CKD.
Don't Compare Your Stage With Someone Else's
Two people can have the same CKD stage but different causes, lab results, treatments, and risk factors.
That's why someone else's CKD timeline doesn't automatically predict yours.
Instead, ask your healthcare team:
“What is my eGFR trend?”
“What is my UACR?”
“What is causing my CKD?”
“What should I focus on right now?”
Those answers are much more useful than simply knowing a stage number.
If you're newly diagnosed and still unsure what to do next, start with a simple foundation.
